Discussing ‘Picher Martin’ by William Golding
Interviewer: Gerry Smyth
This book review was recorded on the same day I was interviewed about ‘What Happens in Shakespeare’s King Lear.’ I was asked to choose a book which had left a deep impression on me. I chose ‘Pincher Martin’ by William Golding, which remains a firm favourite. Golding’s prose is always moving towards poetry and leaning so far into metaphor that (for me) reading him becomes a zen-like experience. I once had the honour of speaking to him over the phone – but that’s another story.
